Well..All I can say here is ..Damn..I hope the Bondsman is ok..but this should be a lesson about being aware of surroundings and if not possible to go to an office for the paperwork then at least go to a public place. Why wasn't the bondsman carrying?

When this news first broke I said to myself.. "Why was this bondsman taking this guy home from the jail??" .. "I bet ya anything he took him out for free and was going to his house to get paid"..

Well after seeing his interview with the news I was correct..

Now the ONLY time I will take someone out without money (10%) FIRST is if it is a CLOSE FRIEND / or FAMILY MEMBER.. other than that .. I will need the 10% up front and paid in full ( I do not chase my money at all, I think it is a total waste of time. )

Here in Miami, you see this wayyyy toooo often Bondsman bailing out defendants with NO MONEY up front .. waiting for them outside the jail and "Kidnapping" them to go to an ATM machine to get their 10% for the bond they just posted. I think this is desperate and dangerous (as we saw in this incident what happened).

What if this guy didnt pull out the Machete when they arrived at the Deft's house..? and the Deft just said to the Bondsman .. "Hey, I have no money to pay you, I lied about having the money at my house..".. (Now this bondsman will have to surrender this deft back into custody and eat the points on the bond to the insurance company.) I honestly do not think this method is worth it at all. Especially when you go to the Deft's playground / home turf ALONE !! and UNARMED !! Totally bad move on this bondsman's actions in this case. If this were me .. this Deft would still be sitting in jail unless someone came to my office and paid me the full 10% for the bond. Then I would have went to the jail and posted the guy's bond and been on my way home. How this deft gets home after he is released is his own problem .. the Deft. is a big boy, he can figure it out...

I totally agree with you, Jeff. That situation had "bad news" written all over it right from the start.

That situation is a common practice, right here in your backyard, Jason. It's another one of those things, out here in So Cal. Like it or not, if you don't do it, the next guy will. The only alternative is another line of work.

Which part is common practice; bailing out inmates before collecting the premium or giving them rides home? I can understand giving a person a ride home from the jail, but to bail somebody out before collecting the premium is just asking for trouble, in my opinion.

BOTH. And you are absolutely correct, in that it is asking for trouble. Don't get me wrong. I'm not condoning it in the least. Quite the opposite. Between you and me (and the entirety of FRN. LOL) I am burning out on it. I have worked for two companies who not only do these things, but do them regularly. I've been that guy who posted the bond with nothing down, and drove the guy home or to the bank, to collect. Again, regularly. It is dangerous and, even more so like was said above....a worthless chase for money that should already be yours. To be honest, I'm burning out and kinda' gettin' crushed under the weight of it. (Somebody call me a wambulance, please!)
