In NC you can surrender anyone you have posted bail on anytime you wish. If you surrender them for any reason other than the seven allowed you must return their money.

As to his being near his grandmother, I had finished the paperwork before she got to the jail and he became mine at that point.

Hope that cleared up your question or statement.

Added: They are released to the Bondsman shortly after turning in the paperwork in some counties and we meet face to face then and there. Other counties are different throughout the state. I've never let one go "free" until I have met him and had all the paperwork filled out by the defendant and the indemnitor.

I make the defendant sign different paperwork than the indemnitor. I don't want one lying and the other swearing to it.
In MD, you have to surrender the entire bail fee to the court upon a premature surrender, regardless if you have collected it or not.

Regulations are really different from state to state. On a premature surrender we must return the monies paid to the party that paid it. I have an" Application"
for the defendant and an Indemnity agreement for the co-signor.

I much prefer recoveries to posting bond. My patience with jailers, defendants, co-signers, Def. family etc seems to wear more thin the older I get.

Bill,

I've been a bondsman as long as I've done recoveries. We talk a lot about recoveries here and I really enjoy the back and forth with you guys but in my opinion, the guys that write bonds don't get enough credit. Not just anybody can write bonds properly. There is much more to it than just writing it. But i'm preaching to the choir on that subject.

I just wish you tight writing Bondsmen would stop being so cautious with who you bond out. And also stop going to pick up your own skips, let a brother have a few bread crumbs from the table please.

On the serious side of the matter I worked for an old time property bondsmen for several years that was the greatest guy to know and work for. He truly tried to help people with a wayward family member’s release. The only problem was that he would not get the proper informational papers filled out completely, took no copious notes, and no photo of the defendant.

So that when the defendant skipped we would have some where to start the search. This was mainly do impart to him knowing the defendant’s elder family members and the family history. I tried vain to tell him numerous times that the grandchildren (defendants) did not give a damn about community history. His response was always “That’s why I have you on retainer”

Yes that did clear it up for me, thank you. It's true, no matter how long you've been in this business you will learn something new all the time.

Got a call this morning from the Grandmother telling me that deputies showed up at her house looking for her grandson. Shortly after, I got a call from the Bondsman that bonded him out asking if I would find him and return him to jail.

Seems he violated a court order by verbally attacking another family member. He is now wanted on a domestic violence charge as well.

Since this is business, not personal, I've agreed to apprehend him.

Problem is, he knows there is an active warrant with his name on it and his Mom lives in Manteo NC, which is near the outer banks of NC.

This will be an expensive pick up if he's in Manteo.

I'll keep you posted.
