Youre welcome... I have been in the drivers seat .. I know the retribution that could transpire.. so I just would like to avoid any possibility of it occurring towards me..

So your response to a citizens complaint of abuse of power is to prove them right?
That was enough rope for my tastes and did not take as long as anticipated.

Scott Not sure I follow ? ... I said "I have been in the drivers seat .. I know the retribution that could transpire.. so I just would like to avoid any possibility of it occurring towards me.." I meant .. I have had complaints against me as a cop by locals ... and know the wrath I unleashed on the ones that complained about me... ... so , I dont wanna make a complaint against this trooper and have the FHP after me for every and any thing they can find or make up when they see me driving down the road....

Ok, I just read this thread for the first time and as usual............. I got somethin' ta say.... my opinion of course... I'm gonna use a couple of quotes from Charlies post... I thought they hit the mark pretty good.................... (besides, I am from Texas myself and find that most of the professionals from there are pretty smart!! ) Quote: I see the LEO's perspective somewhat but approaching with confidence and approaching with attitude are different. Good comparison. Quote: The put a bullet in your head comment is a sign of an insecure or nervous rookie. I don’t think a seasoned vet would have been so aggressive. Way out of line IMHO. He was obviously nervous. Quote: The car resembling a police car is not probable cause to pull someone over in my opinion and borders on a 4th amendment violation. Maybe not probable cause from a legal standpoint, but absolutely an attention getter in my neck of the woods... that would have been a very big red flag in VA... wannabees and cowboys and all sorts of look alike are everywhere and LE absolutely checks this stuff out. Frankly, and this is just my opinion.... no reflection of you NYPD, so don't take it personally.... any time I see someone in our industry, driving and dressing anything like LE or SWAT or closely resembling LE... I take pause to wonder about them... I have been around a long time NYPD and although only a podunk bondsman... I think I am somewhat savy on perceptions... when you look like LE... especially down to the laptop on the stand... the cage... the black-wall tires on a Crown Vic... Quote: He also told me to remove the light bar above the rear view mirror and especially the "light bar above the rear view mirror"!!! well, IMHO, you are asking for a stop. I added this later... in Virginia, if you have any sort of flashing, blinking or other types of lights inside your vehicle... your gonna get stopped and if they are blue... your probably gonna get arrested. period... (Volunteer firemen and others of like organizations exempt of course, but even they cannot have blue.) I suppose you are quite professional in many aspects but I think you would admit that you are acting and dressing and driving in a manner that draws attention... from all corners... I repeat, all corners. and while you have many rights as retired LE... you are retired, not active... period.. you are now a civilian like us all... even in our business, we are still civilians... those licenses we carry give us certain rights but they all still fall under the level of LE... period. NYPD, we all have our own ways of working this business, mine is under the radar... whether bonding or hunting, I frankly have found that looking like I am on the way to Walmart is the best cover... of course, when going to court, I certainly dress appropriately... but otherwise... I am Mr. Tourist.... but then again, that is my deal. Quote: He could have run a check while rolling and never put himself or you in that position. Well, this is certainly what he could have done... and would have known, unless of course the info was removed as that possibilty is apparently available in FL... not sure about that possibility. Quote: It really sounds to me like a new guy with a confidence problem and probably needs some remedial training on how to speak to people. But like the previous poster said, LEO’s are on high alert and I can imagine on edge a little. That is certainly a possibility, but of course, he could also have (as pointed out by that Connecticut Moooo Cow... sorry... ) might have just been having a bad day....

Thanks for your take on it Bill..
yesterday I had to go to Traffic Court to grab a defendant, when parked at the court house an unmarked State Troopers vehicle pulls up parks nose to nose in front of my car.. and the Trooper sees me next to my car with door open says Hello and How Are You?.. and Smiles and walks away.. along with 15 other officers from various departments from around the county going to court also just saying Hi and walking on their way as it always has been prior to this one Trooper's stop on the parkway.. guess this one Trooper had a bug up his butt.. but oh well I am over it .. I am sure he wont be the last, but I hope he was.. lol

Quote: I will agree that there are some rogue, arrogant police officers working the mean streets, but who do you want protecting you and your family from the hardcore bandits Barney Miller or Andy Sipowicz. Point taken, good post Gene. Quote: I meant .. I have had complaints against me as a cop by locals ... and know the wrath I unleashed on the ones that complained about me... ... so , I dont wanna make a complaint against this trooper and have the FHP after me for every and any thing they can find or make up when they see me driving down the road.... Sometimes you just have to "pick your battles". I think just because there are good and bad in everything... you don't stop doing what is right... certainly discretion is involved but everything in life is reduced to a simple "value judgment"... contemplate the actions and the responses and do whatever you think is best. If you have a legitimate complaint and you feel bringing it to the attention of the powers that be is warranted... do it... don't be a candy azz.... if it needs doin'... "getter done". On another post in this thread... I can certainly understand "rolling up in the hood" in a CV, decked out... or a VW... is again, a value judgement... if I have the occasion to enter "hostile territory"... I just call someone that has a CV decked out, like Tony or Gene or Scott... and I sit down the street in my wifes black Chrysler mini van with the 'disabled' license plate and the scooter on the back.... and two loaded big bore pistols... and just let the "big boys" get the job done... I do.... "know my limitations". but it would be very unwise to knock on my window... especially if I am asleep.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, while I was writing this post... a Lunenburg county cop just pulled up in my driveway... one of my buddies... and while my ferocious dogs barked and growled.... Lucy and Lucky.... he smiled and handed me a 'show cause'... God I love this business.... one of my old standbys that got drunk and did not go to court... good ole Thomas Willy.... 'no last name'... I guess I'll go over to his neighborhood.... (not the hood) and have a talk with him.... I will not be dressed as a SWAT officer... (added later: I will however be carrying my little Taurus PT145, concealed and loaded... ya neva know about Willy?? ) I will probably look like... you know... he will answer the door and offer me a beer... and I might sit down and have one with him........... see.... there is a manner in my madness........................ what a business we are in................... Quote: I am sure he wont be the last, but I hope he was.. lol
I can guarantee you... it won't be the last... but it is part of the deal... as an old crotchety judge told me one time when he forfeited a bond on me (which I later got back, thank God).... "well Mr. Marx... your in the bond business, get used to it... "

Jeff, I am not one for candy coating anything...so please don't take any offense to this. We both have different perspectives, you as former LE and I as a criminal defense investigator. I am not fond of bully cops. I believe that their actions collectively endanger the good cops. When someone who feels that they have been wronged, legitimately or not (remember that perception is reality) they will first respond legally, as in filing a complaint and secondly as a form of survival when satisfaction is not obtained. Unfortunately, that retaliatory action is against anyone in the uniform, not the individual that they perceive wronged them.
I have witnessed LE beat an individual that I apprehended with a Mag Light while handcuffed, the whole time screaming "Stop Resisting". I have had my life threatened by LE that I testified against and used their own report to make a fool out of them when their lies were exposed. No, I am not fond of rogue cops, while I have the utmost respect for the good and honest cops. The difference is the first don't last out a career, while the latter usually do.
To my point, you admit that you harassed and caused to be harassed, through your network of LE friends, individual(s) that filed complaints about your behavior(s). Your pattern of harassment was so egregious that you admittedly do not want to face that same level of harassment yourself, to include false charges made up to harass the target, in this case you. You can come to your own conclusion about this pattern of behavior, I certainly have.
To the point of your vehicle, you know damn well that you are not allowed to have lights in your vehicle. Further, unless you are delusional, you also know that other uniformed officers that see your vehicle, complete with lights, assume that you are LE. Because you got away with it from LE that did not want to challenge you, you attack the one officer that did challenge you, as he should have. Were I LE, which I am not, and I were to approach a vehicle that I had reasonable expectation to believe might be impersonating LE, I would also rightfully assume you to be armed. I believe that any reasonable officer would come to the same conclusion, and that is the litmus test. His aggressive verbiage was probably a combination of fear on his part and to proactively make you think twice about making a move for your weapon. I would call it street survival. Use your head and get the lights out of the vehicle and don't become one of the examples that are regularly posted on here as detrimental to our industry. I truly believe that your heart is in the right place and also that your righteous indignation is misplaced in this instance.
For full disclosure, I had a 98 Crown Vic that I put almost 400,000 miles on. I admit that it allowed me to drive unabated by LE all over the country. I have other vehicles that are fully equipped as others can attest, that you would not confuse as a LE vehicle. There is a time and place for both. Your point about needing that type of car in challenged socio-economic areas is contrary to the number of police officers killed just this year. You actually attract attention to yourself and become a target, and there is nothing covert about that. I was shot at in South Philly as was the LE Sgt that escorted me, our hasty exit (with the defendant in custody) could have been inserted into any action movie. It is hard to high five that assisting officer when you both smell like you have padding in your pants!
This is a long post and I hesitated to respond more succinctly than my veiled response, which apparently missed the mark. Please do not take this as anything other than constructive criticism intended to save your life one day. Since you have come over to the dark side, consider practicing "Low Impact" fugitive recovery, you will last longer.
Stay safe,
Scott
