UPDATE ON CASE

Federal probe requested in phony U.S. marshal case

A congressman whose district includes portions of San Diego County is asking for an investigation into the actions of federal officials who apparently allowed a Hemet man posing as a U.S. marshal to enter San Diego’s Lindbergh Field with a woman he “deported.”

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, made the request in a Feb. 18 letter to Janet Napolitano, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. He is asking for a response to his request of records and the investigation by March 1.

“This breach highlights a considerable inattention to detail that placed innocent lives at risk,” Issa wrote.

Issa criticized actions by Transportation Security Administration agents at the airport Jan. 15 and also questioned why Gregory Denny was not held by Border Patrol officials in Murrieta where he attempted to drop off his “prisoner” so they could take custody of the woman.

“At no time, however, did agents question Denny’s alleged law enforcement status, although Border Patrol officers should have known that U.S. Marshals do not perform deportations.”

Denny, 37, was arrested Jan. 18 and booked on suspicion of kidnapping, false imprisonment and impersonating a peace officer, according to Hemet police. The case against Denny is still under review by the Riverside County District Attorney’s office. Denny is free after posting $50,000 bail.

Federal officials have declined to discuss the criminal probe. Officials at TSA could not be reached for comment Monday and representatives with the Border Patrol have said over the weeks they could not provide information about Denny’s interaction with agents in Murrieta or even confirm he arrived there.

According to a news release, investigators received a call on Jan. 18 from a home in the 1200 block of Stepstone Court in Hemet. The witnesses said a man, later identified as Denny, arrived at a residence and identified himself as a U.S. Marshal. Police said Denny was wearing clothing with “Federal Agent” printed on it, had a badge around his neck, a gun belt, and displayed an apparent handgun.

The victim, Cherabelle Hibbard, was then taken to the suspect’s vehicle and then allegedly driven to the U.S. Border Patrol station in Murrieta, police said. Officials at the Border Patrol office told Denny he would not take Denny’s “prisoner” because there was no warrant in the computer system.

Hemet investigators were then told that the suspect ultimately drove the female victim to the International Airport, where he escorted the victim through the airport and to the gate of a departing flight.

The procedure followed by airport screeners was either fundamentally flawed, Issa said, or, if the agents did not follow guidelines, the screeners “suffer from either a lack of training or extreme complacency, or both.” Issa said the department has “shirked its duty to protect the American people.”

The airport security supervisor who permitted Denny to go through security into the airport has been given additional training on how to spot fraudulent law enforcement credentials, a federal spokeswoman said. No one has been disciplined following the Jan. 15 security breach, said Suzanne Trevino, spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration.

Police have said Denny is a distance cousin to Hibbard’s husband, Craig, but that he was not close to the Hibbard family. He said it does not appear that Craig Hibbard had anything to do with Denny showing up at the home.

An attorney for Denny said the incident is simply a family misunderstanding and that the woman was never in danger.

Thats hard to say since we supposedly have been in a drought for the last 3 or 4 years.

Regarding the "accused," he could be off his meds.

Regarding the TSA, what do you expect from minimum wage workers whom barely speak english?

Our certification requirements expired 1/1/2010. The bail associations are trying to get it reinstated but there are those fighting to just let it drop.

The new recovery agents are becoming aware of the lack or regulation now and are setting up shop, ready to go out and round up the skips.

So far no problems..........
