99 percent of our work is done in the "Hood" , projects, low income housing. Hell, we had drug dealers come out to our car and ask us if wanted to buy some weed.

They see our uniform and badges and walk away. lol,lol,


If we worked in high rent and high class part of town all the time. Then normal street attire would be alot better.

I suppose it depends on where you are and the accepted practices.

In some states even looking like a police officer can be illegal and sometimes a persons appearance can be used in proving an impersonation of an officer charge.

Some states have laws against carrying a badge unless you are an actual government employed Officer of some sort.

Don, That is what the law is here, no badges of any kind and you cannot wear any gear that say's FRA, BEA, Bounty Hunter etc. The only thing I have found that will be accepted here is a jacket that may say Bail Bond Agent and that is it! And that only works if you are in fact a Bail Bond Agent.

I know alot of places have gotten extremely strict about how you identify yourself... KY changed their PI laws about 3 years ago. There wasn't any regulation before but now if you are not specifically licensed in KY it is a crime to even suggest you are a PI and you can be arrested and charged.... it doesn't matter if you are licensed in another state LOL...

In KY I usually ID myself as an Independant Contractor for whatever business I'm there for.

In the case of skips, if I am asked by law enforcement I tell them that I am not there to pick up the skip, merely locate the current address and inform the skip of their violation and offer them a chance to take care of the situation on their own.

Should they decide not to do so my instructions are to swear out a warrant as mandated by KRS 440.270 and that one of the requirements is the address of the individual you are requesting a warrant.

Of course it probably wouldn't work if I was carrying any type of badge (I do not carry a badge) or was dressed up in some type of swat outfit or uniform LOL.

I agree that a lot of the dress has to do with your AO and state laws. When we were virtually unknown, we usually wore our FRA T-shirts and badges out so that LE could identify us when people started calling in on us. They tend to do that when someone is walking around with a gun on their side . Now that we are fairly well known, we rarely dress out unless we feel the need for a more forceful appearance. Even then, it's the FRA shirts with jeans and guns in full view. Usually we go casual, jeans or shorts, T-shirt or polo, sneakers, gun in the waistband, badges in, as unobtrusive as possible. This keeps our presence better hidden and allows us to stake out or sneak up on a house much easier.

Exactly Kathy! Low key means it tends to lower the risk. People are not so defensive when you are in regular street clothes and, in my case everything is hidden so as not to increase someones aggresive nature which seems to work well for myself.

Notwithstanding specific state laws that are on point, much of this may fall on the subjective nature of the 'reasonable person' doctrine.

The very act of informing involved persons of the intent to arrest may cause a reasonable person to think that the person or persons taking action are government employees.

In the state of Delaware it is illegal to dress like a LEO. As a matter of fact the Delaware State Police regulate everything that you wear or for that matter everything that you take into the field

You have to send them pictures of you dressed as you do when you are in the streets with all of your gear on. If they feel in anyway you look like a LEO you will not be allowed to wear that piece of gear. If you get caught breaking these rules you are in big trouble with the law!

I think more states should become more involved with this industry to ensure proper techniques and laws!

It all boils down it seems to what is acceptable in your area of operation. After adhering to the laws where I am, I can't fathom dressing any other way it has always worked for me and that makes myself comfortable in doing my job.

LOL, I agree with requirements but actually taking pictures of yourselves and sending it into the State Police to review? LOL.
