Lets start at the beginning--to work in ny you must be a licensed pi or bea period--if you are neither you go to jail--to work in conn you must be a licensed bea period--nj has passed a license requirement and will soon be enforceing it--pa is considering a license this year and i would bet it will pass--so where will you and your team work--most states in the north east and mid atlantic region are going to a license before you think of anything else start finding out about licensing and what is needed by each state meet their requirements and than maybe you will get some more work

while i have never been to a usrb class there rep comes from a lot of problems caused by many of their graduates--if what is said by their graduates is true than the usrb plain out lies to their students about the legallity of bea work in many jurisdictions--so do some research in the states you would like to work get the needed licenses and than advertise--I believe part of the nj bea license will be 5 years leo experiance or 5 years a bea in nj--ny includes a 500.000.00 dollar bond--again research or else you will be sharing a cell with your skip

Here is part of what I found in the NY lic site.

http://www.dos.state.ny.us/lcns/bailfacts.html

PIs
This amendment does NOT have any impact on private investigators (PIs). PIs (whether new to the field or existing) AND their employees can continue engaging in bail enforcement WITHOUT further licensing requirements or training.

BEA Employee Requirements

* All staff: BEA entity must maintain in its files an Employee Statement for each of its staff and submit a fingerprint card and $75 fingerprint fee (payable to Department of State) to the Department of State.

* Staff actually engaged in the apprehension and return of a fugitive: BEA entity must maintain in its files an Employee Statement for each of its staff and submit a fingerprint card and $75 fingerprint fee (payable to Department of State) to the Department of State. Additionally, it must complete 25-hour training.

I thought in NY that if you work under a PI's license you can work as a bea. Am I wrong?

You are 100 percent correct-- you can do bea work under a ny private detectives license--you have to remember there are alot of people in ny actively seeking bailbonds work-- most bondsmen are already hooked up why should they switch there beas--most will not because of liability issues--ny is cracking down on illegal beas so be very careful

Can the PI license be from another state?

How do I know if someone is an illegal bea?

Usually, you have to be licensed in the state you seek to work in..Each state has different laws. CT has a database of all active, licensed BEA agents, and in this state you MUST display your ID at all times..no exceptions. If you check on the Connecticut Dept. of Public Safety website, you'll find the info you're looking for.

So if I have someone running from NY to CT. I would not be able to apprehend that person?

Nope..you need to contact a agent licensed in CT. If you need help, send me an email with your info and I'll contact you. I'll help you any way I can.

ny will only accept ny pi or bea licenses--there is no reciprosity--if a skip goes to conn you need a conn bea--if you live or work close to conn border it is wise to apply in conn for a bea license

by the way as of today there are no licensed bea in ny state

Thanks . I noticed that, its the 500k bond. But I thought Taylor vs. Taintor allowed me to persue across state lines.

I was told most NY skips go to NJ and PA. I have to look those states up.

I found a listing of Bailbond Active Agent's on the NYS insurance website.
What is that?

Thank you all for answering my questions.

One other thing...try using Taylor v. Tainter as a defense against violating state laws. I can name you several FORMER BEA's who have served or are serving jail time thinking that T v. T was there their magic cure all.

T v T will be effective as support when used with other state statutes not by itself--if a case ever rose to the us supreme court than the real test of t v t would occur--do any of you know someone with about 500,000 extra to spend on a defense of bea to the us supreme court i do not so why test it
