HOSPITAL PROPERTY?

Was wondering if anyone has ever arrested or attempted to arrest anyone on hospital property. Not referring to patient but a visitor. I had a client of mine with a FTA on a felony warrant {NCIC} which I received word was going to be picking her daughter up from the hospital the day before my forfeiture was due. Was suppose to be an easy pickup. Apparently this hospital {State Owned} has a contract with local police dept. as well as a private firm. Upon meeting with the sergeant in charge that morning he appeared reluctant to assist despite providing him with copies of warrant. After having the warrants dept. contact him directly and informing them that they were willing to extradite he reluctantly agreed to allow us on property. We were told to inform them if located and they would make arrest. We sat in the lobbies from 7:00 am until 4:30pm when we received word client would be there at 5:00pm. I notified there onsite dispatcher that we would meet them on the floor where daughter was to ID her when arrested. WOW. Four officers showed up and begin chewing on me like couple hungry dogs and escorted me downstairs with out even attempting to locate client. The sergeant ordered me held until he arrived at which time he informed me to leave the property. I informed him of client picking up daughter and he told me if they seen her they would arrest but stated they had no photo of her. I reminded him that when we met that morning I provided a photo with the warrant. I was pretty much told to vacate the premise immediately and if we seen her on street we could arrest. Needless to say that by the time all the drama was over my client was long gone.

Yes, I had a similar experience at a hospital a long time ago. Basically Security will contact management who will advise them that they do not want any drama on the premises, they could care less about you apprehending your fugitive and they don't want you around. After that I learned to covertly surveil at a hospita, watch and wait for the best location i.e. outside to make an apprehension.

In this business you continue to learn something with every case. This one cost me a few dollars but I want make the same mistake.

Here in Miami, FL ... we had a defendant out on a $63,500 Bond.

His good friend was the indemnitor that put up a property and signed the Indemnity Agreement & Promissory Note.. etc..

I personally knew this defendant as well outside of Bail prior to his run in with the law...

Anyways.. This defendant became very flaky and shady and kind of dropped off the earth and was no longer living where he was .. obviously violating bail conditions.. I also had no contact with him and all my calls went unanswered obviously raising a little concern .. but having the good collateral I had .. I really didnt worry too much, but was paying close attention to this case.

Eventually the indemnitor lost contact as well.. and fearing his property he put up might be in jeopardy he wanted to the bond revoked.
Of course the bond conditions were violated anyways due to him no longer living at address stated on application and no contact.

Eventually the defendant called the Indemnitor .. stating that he was in a local hospital here in Miami all messed up and gave him a really unbelievable story as to how he ended up in the hospital .. he told the indem. that he was being discharged and needed a ride..

The indem said ok .. but immediately called me to let me know he was in the hospital but getting discharged as we spoke.

Wasting no time myself and one other Agent rushed to the Hospital as I told the Indem if he calls again to stall him and say he was stuck in traffic... The indem calls us back stating he is waiting in the lobby area..

We get to the hospital .. park in front (fire zone) Hospital Security says . we cant park there.. we tell them we are here to arrest a patient being discharged on a Felony Bond.. (No Warrant as he didnt miss court yet..even his private attorney filed a motion to be removed off his case as he wasnt paid) ... This had all the writing of a Skip going to happen...

Long Story Short ..We tell security .. Tow the Car if You want .. we gotta grab this guy ..

We go into the Hospital Armed... After a brief search of the Hospital (Its a really large hospital with many buildings) .. we locate the defendant.. he was in horrible shape .. he looked like he was run over by a train.. he could barely walk.. head cut open with stitches.. gashes on arms.. broken ribs.. concussion .. looked like a person who was beat to near death with a baseball bat.. anyways.. we grab him .. cuff him in front as he could barely get his arms even raised.. and Bond Surrendered his azz back into Jail . By the time we got the deft and was returning slowly to our car.. 3 Metro Dade Police Officers were by our car.. We told them who we were and what the reason was as to why he was apprehended they were 100% all good with it and off we went to the jail and booked him.. We called the indemnitor and he was absolutely relieved that we got him.... the defendant (a friend) not so happy ...... Case Closed.

Guess it all depends where and who you deal with ...

But honestly .. I would never inform anyone as to why we are there.. I would of just went in .. did what we need to do ..make the apprehension .. and be on our way .. its nobodys business anyways.. we have a job to do and sometimes you trying to be courteous and giving a heads up to Police or Security only makes your job that much harder and or impossible.

I have not apprehended anyone on hospital property. I'm sure they may come a day though and this insight could be very beneficial. I cold foresee issues with arresting an existing patient but never would have though a visitor would/could be so difficult. Jeff has a point though; it depends on where and who you are dealing with. Several times I found myself scratching my head when defendants end up in rehab facilities. That's always a good time

Hospitals are liable for anything that happens to anyone on their property, hence the predictable response. Patience and observation.
