How much thought have you given to your cuff keys ? Probably very little if at all.
Have you ever considered the possibility that you could be captured ? Then restrained with your own cuffs ? While it doesn't happen often, or at least the media never hears about it, it does happen.
So 1 of the practice drills that I used to run on trainees was that very scenario. I instructed them to be cuffed in back, mark their gun belt where their fingers could reach under and behind the belt, then secure a spare, elongated cuff key in that spot.
Then if they ever do get captured, they have the means to escape.
Just food for thought.

P.S.
I gave out miniaturized pr-24 style cuff keys in St. Louis. If any of the NABBI members or any FRN verified member would like some, pm me with your mailing address.

That is great information Ruffin....

I keep a hidden key in the waistband of my underwear.... this came in very handy when Gail wouldn't take the cuffs off me the other nite.. uh... anyway... I was able to squirm around and get the key and got myself out of a very unusual situation... it was a bit embarrasing when they opened the Food Lion store at 8am and I was cuffed in the vegetable department but I managed to get the cuffs off and ran out the backdoor.... thank God I had the key in my underwear... I did manage to get all the lettuce leaves, carrots and a few cherry tomatoes out of my underwear also.... whew... glad that is over.......................

Thanks Ruffin for a a great post... keep those keys handy!!!

Great post Ruffin. I always carry a spare key and used to do the same at work (State C.O.) for all the same reasons.

Caution is key.

I have multiple pairs of handcuffs, all of which are kept double-locked when I am not working a recovery. If someone were to break in to your house while you were sleeping, (and regardless of your nightstand gun, most people don't shoot in their sleep), and found your handcuffs, it would be better for them not to be able to use them.

I understand your point, but when a case pops up......I don't know about you..........the last thing I'll probably check is if my handcuffs are unlocked, right before I hook them to my belt or throw them in my pocket, and that's not the time to make sure they are unlocked. Unless that's what your accustomed to I would not suggest doing that, because the change of habit will throw you off.
I heard a story of a guy who was trained to not keep one in the chamber. So every time he had to draw his weapon he would have to cycle it to put one in the chamber. He still does that now by instinct, even if there is one in the chamber. How many people would remember to do that if the need arose. My point as stated, don't do unless that's your regular routine, because it has the potential of getting you jammed up.
