This is exactly what I was telling the good ol folks at the PBUS just a couple of days ago.

1) He is starting to pi$$ off more and more law enforcement.
2) He create prblems for LE.
3) He is only out for the publicity.
4) Pretty soon the publicity will become all negative.
5) So do we still want to use them as the poster children for bail?

Tony, action sells TV... that is of course why the Jerry Springers, Professional wrestling (forgive me if you like this... but you know of what I speak), Morey Povich and similar shows get the following they do...

It is the current trend toward what is "perceived " as 'reality TV'... it doesn't have to be 'true' only exciting to the general public at large.... and that is what sells... unfortunately.... with something as "volatile" as this show is.... sooner or later it will "pizzoff" the wrong people and come back to bite all that are "perceived" to be associated with that group... and that is us!!

Reality is the majority of folks in our business that never cause a ruckus... never get seen in the limelight and therefore never get reported on national TV...

... if it doesn't sell, it doesn't get reported.... period...

Oh trust me, I know what sells in the "media." In thirty years of television work, I saw it all.

But, it seems like some bail agents and associations still want to hitch their wagon to this act. It may be popular with some of the public but, it has played out with most LE's.

I just can't understand why some much more experienced and I would think smarter than me bail agents, haven't figured that out yet.

Chapman is a publicity hound. I think we can all agree on that...He was offered a TV show with what I'm guessing is a pretty good salary and he took it. I can't honestly say given the same opportunity that I wouldn't take it and I'm don't think I'm the only one.

As far as the OC spray goes, I see decontamination at the water fountain all the time at several jails. Just wash their eyes out and in a cell they go. Sometimes a complete shower is given but in my experience that is rare.

Unless and until the public gets tired of Chapman he will be around a long while so I'll accept that and go on. We as Bondsman, Bail Agents, BEA's etc have gotten a bad wrap long before Chapman so I'm not ready to blame him for our problems, but he's damn sure not helping.

On the other hand, I do not belong to the PBUS and won't because I don't want my money going to him and his crew. I have several friends in the PBUS, Parton, Sew, Holsneider etc. but still won't be a part of PBUS

I belong to a couple Associations that I have respect for and will stay with them.

As long as there is an audience, and the show is making money, it will be around and I'm not losing much sleep over it.

I'm a grown man and can take any criticism that anyone wants to throw out.

I agree with the esteemed Mr. Williams from NC. I do not belong to PBUS, I did at one time, and was a guest speaker for them in 2007. I believe they are using Dog to benefit attention to their organization and I strongly feel that this action has had some modicum of success, or they would not continue on that path. What they fail to realize, and can't quantify, is the number of former members and potential members that they have pushed away by this association. With the current economy in commercial bail, the influx of too many new bondsman with seemingly no pre-qualification by sureties, the competition from the government funded pre-trial release agencies and the over hyped, rarely successful drug courts, that have all combined to reduce the net amount of subjects admitted to commercial bail, there is little money to spend on associations. Therefore, the prudent surety professional, who recognizes the need for an active RESPECTED association, will spend their money accordingly. I have made my decision relative to PBUS, and will not support them in any way as they are contributing to the detriment of this industry in my opinion.

Chapman dresses like an old MC member... waitaminute...

He is a circus act without elephants. But even with that said, the guy does have a rather large amount of apprehensions under his belt and he was in the recovery business well before he got his television show. Now, I am not saying that I like the way he chooses to go about his "business", however, I try to find the silver lining whenever possible, and so far I have found a couple instances of that silver lining.... Because of his flamboyant attire, combined with the popularity of his show, it is easier for me to be inconspicuous; they are not expecting a normal looking guy wearing blue jeans, a cheap Walmart shirt of the clearance rack, strolling down the block, drinking a soda! They are expecting to be able to SEE my handcuffs, SEE my OC, SEE my asp. And they are expecting me to be decked out in SWAT style clothing.

As for the lack of decon after using OC, that is extremely unprofessional. And just plain stupid as well, the more money you have, the better lawsuit target you are.

Well,

doggie and crew were at the February PBUS in Vegas. They are no longer the draw they were years ago. The attendance was way below expectations.

Currently, PBUS is trying to negotiate a $30,000 attrition charge from Harrahs Las Vegas. If they can't, if my memory is correct, the PBUS will be very close to being in the red, financially.

I do not know if they "paid" to appear this last February, but they had in the past pay to have the "honor" of speaking at the PBUS.

Yes, we have had a bad image before he came along. However, his show and others have only made it worse, in my opinion.

The sheriff ion the latest incident in CL says it best in the last paragraph:

Humility vs Peacockery
by Sheriff Stan Hilkey

Today over the lunch hour I had the privilege to attend an employee recognition picnic to honor "years of service" awards for all county employees, but my specific interest was, of course, Sheriff’s Office employees. Five, Ten, Fifteen, Twenty, Twenty, and even a Thirty-Five year employee received recognition for their service. I take great pride in the employees of the Sheriff’s Office and the selfless job they do each day for the citizens of Mesa County. One huge value that I admire in them the most is their humility. I see these folks and their colleagues helping others again and again and placing the needs of others over themselves on a regular basis.

In a very stark contrast to honoring humble, dedicated public servants, was what was occurring in the front parking lot of the Sheriff’s Office while I was supporting our public professionals. My staff had the full pleasure of watching Dog the Bounty Hunter bringing in a desperado. I'm sure that versions vary, but what was clear was a physical confrontation between the "skip" and Dog himself. During the scuffle the skip was pepper-sprayed excessively and Dog conveniently had his tear-away shirt ripped off, all the time the action cameras were rolling and everyone was salivating in the drama at 215 Rice Street.

Ok, I get it; you have a show to produce. Shows need drama. Drama is easy to create and capture in this business. Fine, do your thing and move on to the next revenue-generating activity. What happened inside the lobby though is what is most troubling to me. While Dog stayed outside, shirtless and sweaty, prancing back and forth waving his golden locks for the camera, his team brought this freshly pepper-sprayed fellow into the enclosed space of the Sheriff’s Office lobby with other citizens present. They also brought him in injured.

Here are two things that you should know about what all cops have to do in this situation before they come to jail. If someone is pepper-sprayed in the field they should have an ambulance called to decontaminate the most acute problems of being sprayed. Eyes flushed, nose and mouth checked for proper breathing etc, and immediately affected clothing removed to keep from further contamination. The other thing is if someone is brought in injured or obviously ill they must be medically checked and cleared before being accepted into the jail. Remember, we are spending tax payer money and it is ill advised to adopt the financial burdens of things that happened prior to the arrival of the person to jail, especially injuries that are inflicted by a non-governmental employee subject to no policy or use of force restrictions.

So without any regard for contaminating the other citizens in the lobby of the Sheriffs' Office, or the employees of the Sheriff's Office, they just march this injured, contaminated mess in and expect us to jump and ask for an autograph??? Sorry, but staff did what they would do with anyone, including police officers, who bring someone to jail injured and chemically contaminated. They said, "Nope"...you need to get this person medically fixed up and decontaminated prior to us accepting him. Good news was that someone during the chaos did call the ambulance so the fellow was able to have those problems addressed in the front lot rather than at a local hospital. Not before however, Mrs. Dog attempted to lay a big ol' guilt trip on our staff about "releasing" their catch and educating us about what our judges would think of us. The truth is we didn't release him at all. We simply made them follow the rules that all of us have to follow. There's no special pass for their celebrity status here.

For all those "Dog" lovers out there that love him for catching the "bad guys", I've seen quiet, humble bondsman and bounty hunters bring in their "skips" without incident, without cameras, without a caravan of black SUVs, without drama, many, many times in the last 25 years. I doubt that I'll ever hear any remorse from Dog or his crew about their disregard for the effect of their antics on innocent citizens and staff of the Sheriff’s Office, and I'm sure somehow or another we'll be portrayed as nothing more than inefficient government employees when the show airs, but at least for me it was an interesting contrast in watching 30 year humble professionals vs. genuine profit-driven peacockery. (I know, that’s not a real word...but it paints the picture.)
