you are absolutely right on the networking part Scott but than he wouldnt have gotten to see that side of the country!!
Also here in Tn. we have to notify local Pd. of our presence, which i happily do and have not had to many problems here with that at all.I have had some that dont really care that we are there and have no interest in helping at all but i have also had some that will show up at the residence and hang out the whole time.Of course the ones that come cannot really assist in a search but you can bet that if they witness something happening that is illegal by either the defendant or the Bea they will be there to correct it!!
I had a case in a small town were i located my defendant in a duplex.A nieghbor knew for a fact that if this guys shoes were on the porch than he was there. So i watch the house for about 2 hours,no shoes. My partner ends up having a family emergency and has to leave.I end up having to leave the residence and take him to his vehicle. When I return, sure enough those shoes were on the porch.I NEVER attempt to apprehend someone alone,my only option was to seek out local sheriff deputy.I ended up having to leave that residence once again due to poor cell reception and call the sheriff department.Sheriffs deputy shows up very quickly and i tell him situation and we proceed to bang on this door for about an hour.I know this guy is in the house mainly because of those shoes which were wet and muddy from recently being taken off after walking through the woods. Also there was 2 cell phones in the window, they kept them there to try and get better reception and not miss calls while they slept.I also seen the same hat my defendant was wearing in the picture i had of him.Didnt visually see him though so couldnt actually enter the home. This deputy stayed out there with me for nearly 4 hours, during which he found out who owned the duplex and called him for me.Owner came down and after i stated that he did not legaly have to open the door for me,he proceeded to look through a bucket of keys to try and find the right one.He didnt find the right one so he went back to his house and got a old fashioned dent puller and proceeded to knock out the door lock. The deputy still there,I entered the home while he stayed outside in the doorway.Opened first door i came to and low and behold my defendant and his girlfriend were just sitting there in the dark on the bed waiting for me.They had been up and sitting in there listening to the deputy and I banging on the door and also the landlord beating the crap out of the door knob the entire time.I placed the man in my vehicle and the deputy followed me to a convinient store were i got the defendant a cold drink(I needed one too)Deputy watched the defendant while i went inside.Deputy told defendant that he was lucky that it was me that came and got him, anyone else would have beat the door down and drug him out!! lol and no drinks either.Afterwards the deputy escorted me to the county line. That is just one possitive LE encounter I have had,but I think that is enough writing for one post!!

Aren't these great stories...

Here's a quicky.... got a very small town in North Carolina... which is not my home state as noted... that helped us on a skip where we located the indemnitor on a bond and got info that found and got the skip... the LE in this small town actually gave us permission to enter the local police station when we were in the area... (the doors remained open even if they were not there)... fix us coffee if no one was around and provided us with the names and numbers of both... yes, I said both... only two... the Chief and one deputy... so we could contact them if in their jurisdiction... they loved the excitement... and wanted to be involved in every search...

... another in Fayetteville NC... sent a SWAT team to help us... yep.... 4 officers with automatic weapons... went in with us and we found the perp locked in the bathroom...

... if ya do it right, it usually works out fine... if you act like a cowboy... you might run into Indians.

Another one i came across was another small town here in TN. named Paris TN.
We really didnt have a rock solid adress for our defendant but on our way through town we seen a local LEO drinking coffee while his patrol car was being serviced at the mechanics shop.We stop and ask him if he has seen our defendant and he says he wasnt quite sure.So he calls another Leo to our location,This one recognises the person but cant place an address. So they call ANOTHER Leo,we ended up with 4 patrol cars and one off duty leo in this parking lot.One of which was a sgt. and the off duty officer ended up knowing the family and put us right on our defendant which ended up being in a hospital over 100 miles back in the direction we came!! These officers were calling all sorts of people as well as checking their own data bases. It looked like there was going to be a sting of sorts in this parking lot
These officers were by far the most helpful as well as a fun group of guys that I have come across here in TN.

Scott, i have a lot of good contacts around the country, but this one was personal and nothing could have stopped me going out there. This girl had robbed a couple of resteraunts and was a heavy drug user. She took off 5 months ago with her 5 year old daughter that her own parents had custody of. The grandparents have barely slept in the last 4 months over concern for their grandaughter.
I lost money on this one after 5 months of tracking her down, but i can sleep easy tonight knowing that a 5 year old girl is sleeping well and no longer in danger...
Plus the look on the skips face when she opened the door of her camper trailer 3 thousand miles away from the scene of her crime was priceless!

Dean,

You need to do some more networking, it is faster and cheaper in the long run. It is great to earn friends and fellow professionals that you can trust to produce quality work at a fair price.

I exemplify your point. I have dropped everything to personally handle a case that is in a place I have never been or the type of investigation I have not done yet. All it has to do is intrigue me and I am on it. I am blessed to have been able to surround myself with very capable people that are trust worthy. I have personally made apprehensions in 34 states and if the possibility comes up in the 35th, I am gone! To the point of the original topic, I have been treated better in places that I have never been by LE than I have been in my own back yard. Some of that has to do with the unspoken competition between our group and the local warrant squad. I have heard through the clerks at the warrant squad that their guys get reamed by their LT if we capture someone they have been looking for. They know when we start a case because we source pictures from them. The pictures usually come with a comment like "They have been looking for him for 2 weeks" or something similar. To keep the level of competition somewhat sane, we have met warrant squad guys behind the Best Buy to give them our captures, they get the credit internally and we don't have to wait several hours at the jail to do the surrender. We usually get a phone call from the clerks the next day asking us who got him, and we reply with a question, "What did he tell you?" and they say "That is what I thought!"

I was even accused of being a FED while making an apprehension in AL, the reasoning was that the locals would not put a white and black officer in the same cruiser! It must still be the 50's down there!

Even if not required, it's always a good idea to call law enforcement before you hit the house. You may not know the police have been called, if it's someone in a back room or across the street. If they already know you're there it goes so much smoother.

On the rare occasion someone calls on us, the officer who shows up usually knows no more than the fact that we are allowed to be where we are and do what we do. Then they end up asking us questions for half an hour.
