Weapons

A really great pair of high dollar running shoes also works wonders... and being able to hide behind thick metal objects also helps... and keeping at least two extremely tough former active duty Navy Seals close by also helps... as does a very fast car or truck.... just a little food for thought....

Most important.... be very aware of your surroundings... get in tune... vigilance will often times result in you not having to use that weapon... I would rather tell a bad joke than shoot somebody. (uh, well, that didn't make any sense, did it?)

While not the strongest cal, I've been carrying a 3.8 XDm 9mm since they came out a short time ago. 19+1 capacity- 2 extra mags, gives me nearly 60 rounds at my fingertips.

From my understanding they have new 3.8 model in .45 coming out with a 13+1 - tempting.

I am fond of spitballs and strong language but I have never been accused of being the sharpest tool in the shed.

I carry around my Mother in Law, a little expensive to feed, and having to pull around the livestock trailer can get annoying, but it scares the hell out of the fugitives, I guess I am just used to her...

I would say don’t forget about the Blast Knuckles But I think the tactical running shoes would be a good investment. And never forget about the prisoner special, the lock in a sock. We had a guy come to work with a set of these on his belt onetime, he did not last long, but it was funny as hell.

I know I'm new here and dont meen to step on anyones toes BUT.
Ball ammo is a very bad choice because it WILL over penetrate due to it not expanding when it enters the body. Thats why its a good choice for barriers such as windshields, walls and car doors. It will pass straight through a human and keep going.

Lower grain JHP's move faster than Higher grain JHP's with the same charge. I'm not saying they wont expand and slow down once entered into the body, just saying they move faster with deeper wound cavity and better chance of over penetration.

For self defence purpose, Use a good name brand , factory loaded JHP.

Here is the best advice I can give.... IMHO... it makes no difference what firearm you choose (and believe it or not, that is an absolute fact)... making a decision to use it is always the last resort but if you make that choice, the most important thing is that you practiced with it and CAN HIT WHAT YOU AIM AT... a little ole' lady with a .25 pee shooter who can shoot is much more able to deal with and eliminate a threat than an untrained wanabee with a .50 Nitro.

I personally know of a .25 bouncing off a friend of mines belt buckle, also bouncing off a leather jacket... but if the shooter had been proficient and able to hit what they were aiming at rather than just 'throwing lead'... my friend would be dead... accuracy is paramount... the caliber is secondary.... IMHO...

... one more thing... what type of ammo you use is also not the first consideration... lead from the end of a gun gets it done... whether is JHP, ball, dumb dumb, lead, JSP or whatever... hit what you aim at and worry about the rest later. When you are done with all the other stuff then you can worry about what type of ammo is in the weapon...

I personally carry an SP101 hammer-less Ruger .357 but the ammo is JHP .30+P... also a couple of .40's but I have never fired the weapon in defense... although I have made it visible on occasion just to ........... let's say.... enforce my stance.... in many cases, you need not pull to get your point across... just the sight of the weapon will often entice the person to comply with your wishes... even remaining in the holster. Frankly, I really don't want to shoot anyone................. not today, anyway...

I have had extensive experience in Afghanistan with treating gun-shot wounds from:

7.62x39mm (AK-47 and RPK variants)
5.56x45mm (M-16/M-4/M-249)
9x19mm (Beretta M9)
7.62x51mm (M-240/Mk-48/M-14/M-24)
7.62x54mm (Dragunov SVD/PKM)

Fact of the matter is standard ball or full-metal jacket ammunition will often times not put someone down or really out of the fight unless a direct shot to the heart or nervous system is achieved. Another bad concept of these ammunitions is they tend to pass straight through tissue unless they are stopped by bone or thick muscle. Most of the wounds I have encountered by the first three calibers listed the entry is about the size of a dime and the exit is usually the size of a quarter to half-dollar using ball or FMJ ammo. The last two calibers are good with any type of ammunition mostly just due to the velocity and bullet weight, but is it really practical for us to carry even a SOCOM (compact M-14)?....

Now, to apply this to the civilian world

It is quite possible you could find yourself in a Close-Quarters Battle inside of a parking lot, home or apartment complex. Any of these situations is NOT a good place for "solid" or non-expanding ammunition. I use Speer Gold Dot 124gr Gold Dot Hollow Points. They cost $29 for a box of 20 (They are not PLINKING rounds, they are the top of the line PERFORMANCE rounds). If you are using a 9mm I would recommend larger bullet loads such as the 124grain or 147 grain because you get more impact energy on the target. 124 grain offers the middle ground for 9mm loads for both velocity and impact. They are not prone to over-penetration under any circumstances and usually the load of most police agencies that use 9mm.

Granted you want to engage your target, but you MUST consider what is behind your target and what could possibly be behind your target. You want to preserve the lives of your colleagues, citizens and yourself.

Pistol selection:

I tried out a number of firearms when I went to select my sidearm Ruger, FN, Beretta, Walther, Kimber, Springfield, Glock, CZ...

The sidearm I settled on after spending a good 3 hours of checking features and seeing how it fit my hand, balance...

I found a SIG Sauer P225 was the best choice for what I wanted. It has a reasonable caliber (9mm) which ammunition is readily available and comes with many options for loads. It only has a single-stack 8 round magazine (single stack magazine weapons are easier to conceal), but I do carry two spare magazines. I baught it standard with Tritium night-sights for low-light shooting, comes standard for both single and double-action, has NO manual safety but comes standard with a "de-cocking" lever to prevent AD, and is one of the best 9mm handguns I have ever used.

Find what fits you, set down and think about what you want and then go find it...KNOW what you want before you go to a gun store...
