This is all great info!

One more thing. I have read the book "Modern Bounty Hunting" and Rex wrote that when he is working he has his gun in the open because, I quote, "chances are that the people that issued your CCW permit does not know you are using it for work."

What are your thoughts about this?

If you knew some of my previous employees - you would understand tsuggs comment "concealed means concealed"

Oh . . . I fully UNDERSTAND that "Concealed means Concealed" . . .
The State in which I reside prosecutes should one with a CHGL (Concealed Hand Gun License) accidently have their weapon seen in public. So yes, "Concealed MEANS Concealed . . . unless one is "On The Job" . . . I have been around for awhile.

What I was referring to, was your statement about carrying your weapon when your Employer made it clear that it was a NO NO on his premises.

Soooooo, did you have employees that you were afraid of? Or did you simply misspeak in your first statement ?

Keep in mind this was 17 years ago,ad when an employee came in and threw down his sales bag screaming and a round was discharged from his weapon in his sale bag, I made a conscienous decision after that I would rather be fired than be carried by six. And those who I worked with, that I considered family, did the same I am sure. It was after that incident the company wrote the policy and simply installed electronic locks and video camera's (doesn't do much when each office is facing outside and the wall is all glass. And I think there is a big difference from being afraid and being prepared.

Or as I was once told, I don't carry because I feel inept against someone else, I carry because when they have a gun and I don't, I am inept. :D Did I violate company policy? Yes. I admit it, and if anyone ever asked me I would admit to them because it was never in their interest to fire me as I was a model employee and other reasons (Have all yarly reviews to prove that too, I will pm you as to why it was never in their interest). But I did violate the policy because I felt the company did little to protect it's employees and myself. And I might add that in my time, two bodies where found in the canal across the street in less than two years from our office (None of our employees, Thank God). It was so bad that eventually they hired security, and even then cars would still be broken into...our secretaries had to be escorted to their cars (And they where parked in a gated parkway)

Worse part, if you had to wait for Miami Metro, you might as well put your entire life savings into lotto tickets......

There is not a day that goes by that I dont carry my weapon when I leave the house. About 40 min from where I live there was a young couple that were brutally raped and murdured by 4 men. About 15 min from where I live there was a major drug bust where 30 ppl were arrested for trafficing. My family and I will not be one of the victims that are robbed, beaten or killed. Too many people wouldnt think twice to put you in harms way.

This went from legitimate to ridiculous. There is a difference between a working permit to carry while performing your duties and a concealed carry for personal protection. As Tony Suggs stated very clearly, and for the uninformed, he is a nationally recognized professional in this industry, concealed means concealed. If you are carrying concealed, and you are properly skilled in concealed carry, nobody will know that you are armed, period. Badges, we don't need no stinkin' badges, no good can come from them. There is nothing more ridiculous than seeing pictures on the internet or on you tube, with 3 or 4 Bounty Hunters all wearing different badges. It is confusing to the people that you are dealing with and causes more issues than if you had none. My last pet peeve is Bounty Hunters hanging around outside of Bail Bond Offices or walking around the court house with a bail enforcement badge around their neck, as they clearly are more interested in their public persona then the covert nature of this business. Nobody has ever been charged, to my knowledge, with impersonating a police officer without a badge. This is serious business and not a game. Your life is in jeopardy when plying your craft. Be a professional and leave Halloween for the kids.

Scott

Well is there a certain license I can get to let me use my gun for work or is it just the HCP?

Thank you Scott.
I going to make a little statement here.
I was a commissioned Deputy Sheriff Reserve Officer(Commission means full power of arrest)

Anyone that would carry in a prohibited place for firearms is subject to arrest in any state in the U.S. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone that would carry at someone else's place of business with them prohibiting firearms should be fired and arrested both.I have no respect for them or lost what respect i had for them. Not only can a criminal lawsuit be brought against you at any time, but one could be brought against your employer and they could lose their business, their families livelihood and receive prison time. Stop and think people a second could lose everyones nest egg,Freedom and a persons business that most have built over many years. There are a few here on the forums that spend mega dollars on firearm insurance premiums every year or quarterly ,how ever you have to pay and it is not cheap. Carry responsible people.

Badges and firearms are a responsibility and a privilege so use them as such.
I have never carried a badge for bail enforcement , never
I have never carried a badge for Private Investigations. Never
In this business since 1975
I spent many years in this business and never carried a firearm, I do today thanks to Modern Chemistry and the crack monsters

What Rex was referring to, would probably only apply to CA.

In most CA counties, it is very hard to get a CCW. It is ususally issued to someone that has a demonstrated need for personal protection. Not because of a dangerous job occupation.

Now, all this depends on the local sheriff or police chief. They set what conditions that they will issue a CCW. Many will not issue any at all.

So Rex was stating that you would probably not get a CCW issued if one of the reasons, Your Good Cause, was for work as a bail recovery agent. And if you already had a CCW in CA, and the issuing agency found out that you were carrying concealed while working as BFRP, it could be revoked.

Yes, we have many LE chiefs that do not want ANY citizen to carry weapons. However, there is a change happening and we are starting to see some sheriffs that believe in the 2nd amendment.

Carrying a badge is a double edged sword, a bail enforcement agent opens himself and his employer up to criminal and civil liability if he displays or merely possesses a badge in some states. He can also endanger himself and his family if the badge is displayed while off duty accidently or intentionally. The cowboy and Dog the Bounty Hunter types of this industry is what cause us all headaches, insofar as the federal and state governments are standing by to regulate the business right out the door.

Some states like Delaware issue bail enforcement agents state identification cards and state badges and restrict the agent to only carrying that badge while working in the state. We must first remember that a bail enforcement agent is not a law enforcement officer, he has no swore duty to protect life, property, or arrest violators so why would he want to display a badge. I asked this question of new bail agents in training. If you had a badge and gun, how would you react if one of your friends was almost run over by a fleeing suspect?

Most say that they would fire a warning shot to get the suspect to stop, many others say that they would try and shoot the tires out. The truth of the matter is that most would not know what to do because they have never been confronted with a similar situation. Nor have they been properly trained how to handle the kinds of situations police officers and veteran bail agents sometimes encounter while working the streets. Spending a whole lot of money taking tactical weapons and warrant service courses is not the answer. You should invest your money in college level courses such as psychology, sociology, and stress management, these are the relevant subjects that are going to assist you on the streets. If you only remember one thing that I have said here, remember this... go home the way you came "Alive".
