Here . . . 1 Dollar and the Title . . . .present @ the Revenue Office (DMV, we just like to to call it something fancy) and as the fellas have all said . . . the owner cannot sell it without satifying the lien. Scott, we too cannot USE anything that is given to us as collateral.

Here is the .pdf form for Virginia... it should be very similar in most any state:

http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/pdf/vsa66.pdf

I carry several of these with me in my briefcase and when I take a title I get this signed by the owner.... otherwise you won't be able to obtain a lien.... the signature is required on his title and this form in Virginia... probably the same in most states.

Josh,

You can put a "lien" on real property or get an "abstract of judgement" from a civil court and record that at the county clerk - recorders office.

Most states handle vehicle liens at the DMV or the revenue office as they like to tax us for our cars. Vehicles are one of the few "personal property" items that the State can tax us very easily. We have to register then and we drive them in public.

So some states look at them as a revenue source. It would be very hard for them to come into your house each year and try to tax you for your sofa, tv and microwave oven.

Some cities, counties, and states tax personal assets such as vehicles. Some don't. That is something to consider when determining living expenses.
