Post subject: What would you do?

I have had a interesting situation come up and I wanted to get some input on what to do. I recently worked with another fugitive recovery agent here in Oklahoma. While working with him he made several comments that concerned me about him stealing from peoples homes. After a while I started having the suspicion that he was stealing but I couldn't prove it. Just a few days ago while placing a subject in custody, the agent in question did an unwarranted search of the vehicle of the fugitive's friend. After we turned over the fugitive to the PD, he proceeded to tell me he took pepper spray out of the friend's car. He called me the next morning and informed me that he had sold 2 stolen guns. I believe those guns were also stolen from the car.
So the question I pose is what would you do in this situation?
My solution was to terminate my involvement with this individual and to call the police department and inform them of the situation of the stolen guns.

At this point, you have no choice. You just basically confessed to being an accessory to these crimes after the fact on a public, international forum that is read by not only BEA's, but cops from all walks of life and departments...not to mention all of the other CJ professionals who read us. Judges, DA's, AG's, etc. It's even been reported that intelligence types from certain 3 lettered federal agencies read us as well.

You need to go to your local Pd/So ASAP before they come to you. Also be aware that if you think you can't be tracked by your ISP address registered with this forum, you are mistaken.

I would also consult with an attorney 1st, and have them accompany you to the Pd/So.

Not necessarily seeking approval, but some constructive criticism on how to handle this should the situation arise again with anyone else I work with. I pride myself on being a professional and I do not like to be associated with people who conduct themselves in an unprofessional manner.

I have already been in contact with the PD in both the town which I live and in which he lives. I was not aware of the stolen guns until after the fact and called the PD as soon as I found out.

Then your post begs the question of it being posted in the first place ? You became aware of a possible crime and you reported it. So why tell the world of it ?

I'm confused...... :?

My question is a little more sensitive...If you suspected something untoward, why did you continue to associate with this person? Your continued association after you suspected illicit activity makes you an accessory before the fact.

This is why we hammer the fact that we must be above and beyond reproach.

Best of luck,

Scott

My involvement with this person was over a less than 2 week period. I had suspicions but never had proof. Trust me, I battled with my conscience over the situation and the minute I knew without a doubt that unethical activity (the pepper spray) had taken place I made the decision to terminate my association with him. Once the information about the stolen guns came out, I did not hesitate to contact the PD.
I have read these forums for quite a while and find it to be a wealth of information. Until this incident, I had never had a situation in which I felt the need to ask for the input of others. I appreciate the advice that I have gotten. Thanks.

My only thought is that "if your radar goes up and you think something is wrong with a particular situation... it probably is..." Hind site is always 20/20, but having second thoughts from the get-go... I wouldn't have started the relationship initially...

Of course that is not changing the current action, so I guess I would agree that going to LE now with hat in hand and explaining yourself may or may not get you out of this....

Well... you won't have to worry about it happening again if LE doesn't come to your side... because you may be out of the business anyway...

THIS BUSINESS, UNFORTUNATELY, SEEMS TO DRAW A FAIR NUMBER OF UNSCRUPULOUS PEOPLE THAT USE THEIR POWER AND POSITION TO NOT ONLY CAUSE HARM BUT TO BREAK THE LAW IN MANY WAYS... the legal controls that are exerted on them often times and unfortunately do not surface until after the fact... we very often have to police our own business.

Good luck.
