While connected to a related post, I am creating a seperate topic so more people will readily see it. It was in my search for a working leo-trained k-9 that I stumbled across this website:
http://www.lackland.af.mil/units/341stmwd/index.asp

It had never occurred to me that MWD's (Military Working Dogs) were available to us, the general public for adoption. These animals have already been trained, medically checked out, and are in excellent shape for personal protection, BEA, or Civilian Police Work.

Another person on here, William Berry, educated me to a breed I had not previously heard of..The Belgian Malinois Shepherd. According to the research I have done tonight, this breed is used exclusively by our Secret Service and the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces). They have a life span of app. 10-14 yrs, and are very agile, athletic, and extremely intelligent. There are several of these animals listed on the above website.

I was just talking to the Boss the other day that when we get another dog it will be a larger one that can protect itself and us if needed. We have 4 ankle biters now. It would be great to adopt one of these that have at least some basic training.

One question, when looking at the adoption list, what is the whelp date? I'm a civie and don't know much of the military lingo.

Hey Tony,

The welp date is the date the dog was welped from the mother, meaning it was not feeding off the mother any longer. Hope this helps.

I had never heard that term, either. I have always heard "ween". Thanks for the info.

Just to add to my last post, the welp date is also usually the date the pups are seperated from the mother.
