Operating under a PI License in another state

A "foreign" corporation is any corporation incorporated in one state but registered to do business in another state. They are a "foreign" corporation to the other state. I could be incorporated in CO and registered to do business as a foreign corporation in NY, but that doesn't mean that I can conduct PI, BE, or other "service" work there unless I meet the requirements of that particular state. The short answer is NO you cannot work in another state unless that state accepts your authority from the originating state.

There has been so much pontification on this critical issue. The answers you seek should be found in your state laws/codes and within the state agency that enforces regulations relating to private investigator employment. Currently there are about ten states that do not require you to have a private investigator’s license, a few of the states require only a business license. In effect this means any “Yahoo” can set up shop in those states and claim to be a professional investigator. Further I would suggest that you check your states reciprocity agreement with other states as it relates to out of state investigators working in the state in question

If someone were to take your advise the only thing that would be expanding would be their backside as Tyrone will properly educate them on the ways of the City, County lock up. (Where do they all come from)

The correct answer to your question is as Kathy said. Some one must hold the appropriate licensing in New York period. New York will not honor any kind licensing from any other state.

Most state will give an investigator from 15 to 30 days in which to do business if your case takes you into another state.

You can not work in NY as a PI with a Pi license from another state unless as David stated your case takes you there, then I believe it was 90 days for the case (I'll have to check on that, it might be as David stated).
As for the person opening a Branch office in NY....It is possible, but a NYS PI license will still have to be obtained along with the business license.

Mr. Legend I see your from the Bronx......I hope that is not how you are conducting business here. As I have stated in another post the only way to work in this industry is to have a PI License, BEA license, be a Bondsman or work for one of the three directly (I say directly as in an employee of them not contracted.) Sure you might be "getting away with it" for now.....just beware that it may catch up with you. I also have read your other posts....we'll under one other topic actually.

Seriously though......as much as I would like for soooooo many people to stop trying to get in this field or stop working in this field in my area...so I may get some more work...I will not give out wrong information...new or old to this field...misleading anybody possibly causing more harm. I know your from USBD and you don't consider yourself similar to USRB, but based on your statements you are sounding just like them. Just my 2 cents.

Well if his statements aren't scaring you, they certainly are me....illiteracy, illegal information, operating illegally in NYS, etc etc. No way would I ever have anything to do with that organization or any of thier personnel.
