Confronted with a deer whose antlers were tangled in a rope swing at a rural home, two officers saw no good choices. They weren't about to try to free the animal themselves. It weighed several hundred pounds and was thrashing wildly. A bullet in the skull seemed the alternative.
"They thought they were going to have to kill it out of compassion," Lt. Jim Strovink of the Clackamas County sheriff's office said Wednesday. "It was going to die a slow, agonizing death."
Then Deputy Jeff Miller thought of the stun gun, commonly called a Taser, after its maker, used to immobilize out-of-control prisoners or suspects.
Zap!
The deer stopped moving. The officers, one a sheriff's deputy, the other a state trooper, untangled the rope, which was dangling from a tree limb, and freed the buck.
Not long after, the deer "took off happy as a clam," Strovink said. "That was pretty good thinking."

Interesting that it worked. I wonder if it did any harm to the animal. I know that Taser International says that the X-26 is not meant for animals, and sells a specific model for animal control.

Suppose it was better then killing the poor thing..at least he was able to be freed...sorry. I'm an animal lover!!!

I though they used their heads on this one myself, think about the first option they were going to use... it was less harmful using a Tazer versus a bullet to the head!

The Deputy definatly did..better then the other option...

Split second Command decision...we have the luxury to "Monday morning QB". We werent there. They were.
They didn't have to waste time considering humane options. I have seen cold and calloused officers get dispatched to "animal calls" before only to arrive, shoot the animal, toss into the woods, and drive off. Never looking back. alot of officers resent those calls and dont deem them worthy of thier status as a Police Officer.
