Subject: N.J. new cell Phone Law.
The State of New Jersey has just made driving while using a cell phone a primary offense. This means that police can now pull you over solely because you are talking on the phone. This also includes text messaging.
A conviction or guilty plea to this offense will be considered as a conviction / plea for "unsafe driving". While this is a no-point violation , it carries a $ 250.00 surcharge meaning that this ticket will cost anywhere from $ 380.00 - $ 439.00 for the first offense !!!!!!!!!!

Now is that for using the phone, hands free or not? In CA, our law goes into effect April1, 2008. Everyone must use a hands free device to talk while motoring down our streets and freeways.

Something must be in the air when you get near big water to make governments want to rule your life.

New York, New Jersey, California, Chicago..... See what I mean?

Tony, Hands free is fine at the moment, although I would believe they won't be in the future as they will be classified a distraction to the driver.
Aren't some states considering banning cigarettes when driving due to Insurance companies claiming that they are a distraction also??.
I wonder why on the NJ Turnpike that on the overhead computerized billboards they encourage you to call and report reckless ,bad drivers or anything suspicious.
I guess in reality that means pull over and call??, with my luck. I'd get pulled over & fined for making such a call.

In CA we have those same electronic boards asking you to report drunk drivers.

But even better, you can't smoke in your car if you have anyone under the age of 16 in the car also. Thats a state law.

Oh one more, your child has to be over 49 lbs or 4 feet tall otherwise they must be in an approved "booster" seat.

CT is the same..electronic billboards, cell phone laws...Ours went into effect last October, and no one abides by it..the cops handed out thousands of tickets and people just paid them..if you purchased a hands free adapter, you show the reciept to the court and it gets tossed...I'm not sure about that smoking thing, but here the new thing is if your a 16 year old, newly licensed driver, you can not have anyone in the car with you except for a parent and can't drive past 10pm....

This may sound stupid... but talking hands free... is that any different than talking to a passanger???? Talking to a passanger would seem more distractive cause you might turn your head and look at him/her... maybe they will outlaw talking while driving??? :P
