Shots from crowd injure bondsman serving warrant

Published: Tuesday, 12/25/07
Update 4:20 a.m. Friday

A bail bondsman was shot in the shoulder as he was serving a warrant on 11th Avenue South overnight.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. Friday, Metro police responded to a call at 1474 11th Avenue South about a shooting, Metro police Capt. David Imhof said.

Six bail bondsmen had gone to the location, a public housing complex in Edgehill, to serve a warrant on a man who was wanted for failure to appear in court. The man faced charges including robbery, criminal impersonation, domestic violence and evading arrest, Imhof said. The bondsmen went inside, found the man, handcuffed him and brought him outside, Imhof said.

The man in custody attempted to run away but he was apprehended, Imhof said.

About two people in a crowd outside fired shots, hitting one of the bondsmen in the shoulder, Imhof said. Police think one of the bondsmen fired one shot. No one was hit.

The injured bondsman was transported in a personal vehicle to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His condition is critical but the injury is considered non-life-threatening, Imhof said.

It is not known why the shots were fired from the group outside. Police were at the scene interviewing the five other bondsmen, Imhof said.

Well right off the bat they got a key piece of info wrong . . . serving a warrant . . . how about "exercising the right of re-arrest" . . . must be the season for shooting at bondsmen . . .
