SANTA ANA– A judge denied a request today by high-profile defense attorney Joseph Cavallo to sever his criminal case from that of two bail bond men also accused of a bail bonds scam.

Cavallo is charged along with Alejandro de Jesus Cruz and Jorge Andres Castro in what authorities call an illegal bail-bonds referral scheme.

Today, Orange County Superior Court Judge Carla M. Singer denied the motion to detach Cavallo's case from those of the two co-defendants.

Cruz – the owner of Xtreme Bail Bonds in Santa Ana – and Castro are accused of keeping a stack of Cavallo's business cards at the bail business, and referring Orange County Jail clients to Cavallo, who then allegedly gave a discount to inmates. Castro worked at the bail bond company.

Bail bonds workers may not recommend any attorney to any bail bond client, even if no money changes hands.

Cavallo has pleaded not guilty. Trial is set for January.

Cavallo defended Gregory Haidl, the son of a former assistant sheriff, who was convicted with two friends in March of sexually assaulting a girl.
