Let me put my opinion out there with a political angle to it. Being in the largest bail market in the U.S. and the most liberal state, I don't have much hope for private surety bail to continue much more than another 20 or 30 years. Especially if we continue to have the Democratic Party occupying the White House for another 8 years. It is a fact that the liberal mindset believes government can do everything better than private business. Also, government can solve all crime problems with counseling, EM, etc. There is already major moves in CA to expand PTRS and eliminate private bail. Some counties are just doing it without needing any new laws. San Francisco is one county doing it big time. As most things that start in CA, they tend to spread across the country. Second most important part of this issue is, as bail and bail recovery agents, we thought we were immune to economic changes and being legislated out of business. We were wrong on both accounts. Eric Ganof the author of the above articles from AIA Surety, is leading the fight to save surety bail. But I think it may be too little too late. There is just too much apathy among bail people. Just my opinions, hey I may be wrong. |

Maryland just removed bond setting abilities from the Court Commissioners and Judges will now work on Saturdays and Sundays setting bonds. We don't yet know if this is our industry death sentence yet but most believe so. Scott |
