There is a version of this scam that has become common up here. The scammers pose as a relative who has been detained at the Canadian border. It goes something like this: "Hi Grandma... I need to talk to you... I got arrested in Canada, they stopped me and found drugs in my car... They won't let me leave unless I pay $5000. I need you to wire me the money or I'll go to prison..." The scammers generally don't have any information on the person they are pretending to be, they often rely on the person they have called to unwittingly divulge the information on who they are pretending to be. i.e, "Jack? Is that you?... Yes Grandma its jack, I really need you to help me.." My grandparents received one of these calls a couple years ago. My Grandfather has lost some of his hearing, and said my name when the scammer said "It's me grandpa....".... well, they were using the Canadian border drug stop story. My grandparents just hung up on them and called to find out what was really going on. Unfortunately, these scams do work on some people. |
