Private Investigator Eyed In Bomb Scare

The private investigator, who police believe, is responsible for installing a GPS unit under a car that public safety officials thought was a bomb could face felony charges and have to cover the cost of a 4- hour investigation.

Police spokesman, Lt. Michael Peraino, said a concerned resident in the apartments at One Station Street called police at 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday (April 14) after looking out his window and seeing a man pull up in a car with Florida plates. The witnesses reported the man got out of his car and went over to a green Honda that was parked in the apartment complex’s parking lot. He then got on the ground and went underneath the Honda. The witness said he looked like he was putting something under the car.

Police officers arrived and saw a device under the Honda but could not identify it. The owner of the car, who is from Brazil, was out of town but due back that night, police said. The owner of the Honda lives at the complex and has been having a child custody dispute with his wife.

“We have had reports of private investigators working in the area,” Peraino said.

The Hingham Fire Department was dispatched to the scene but also could not identify the device. The State Police Bomb Squad was called and the MBTA was notified to stop all Greenbush trains, police said.

The area was evacuated. Residents of the apartments were taken by school bus to Derby Academy on Burditt Avenue. The MBTA bused southbound commuters from the Weymouth train station in Jackson Square to the Nantasket Junction Station where a Greenbush train picked them up.

The bomb squad used a robotic camera to take a look at the device but could not identify it.

The bomb squad then used at water canon that fires water at high pressure to knock the device off the car.

The device turned out to a GPS unit. The scene was declared safe at 9:06 p.m., police said.

Hingham police have processed the scene for evidence and are looking at a private investigator that was working the area as the one responsible for putting the device under the car.

Police said they contacted the private investigator Tuesday night and he denied being involved. Police said that investigator was the man the witness saw put the device under the car.

If proven, the private investigator could be charged with possession of a hoax device and be responsible for paying the cost of tying up police and fire departments and stopping the train.

I think the police just wanted to play with their toys to justify their terror fighting budgets! Gene, remember when this happened in College Park? They removed the tracker and blew it up!

If the police officers were not able to identify the device, they should quit in shame.

Yes I do, that whole thing was a mess. LE wanted to keep that on the down low, however the media got wind of what really happened and reported it. My issue with this story is that if the PI was only doing a job, and if LE & FD personnel failed to identify the device they should be retrained or fired for being some dumbazzs.

For what it is worth, I changed my contracts after the College Park Incident, to include full payment for the device against a credit card detainer, should the device not be returnable for any reason. This specifically includes: falling off, taken off, stolen, destroyed, confiscated etc., any reason it does not come back to me. This also stops clients from their pressing need to have to tell the estranged spouse that "I know where you were last night". That gets them talking around the water cooler and some bright bulb tells them what happened to his cousin's ex-wife's brother in law...you get the picture!

Incidentally, I was hired by one spouse to locate and remove the tracker her estranged husband had put on her truck (You see Bill, Her/truck means we live in the country too!) He was a police officer and the tracker that he used recorded audio too, and that my friends is a Federal Offense in MD, as it is a two party state, and he knew better. When she came in to my office to interview potential investigators, my father in law (truck driver and serial player) about fell out of his chair. He was just visiting and developed a keen interest in the business shortly after that! I felt like I was in a Mickey Spillane scene, me trying desperately to be cool and in control, her 6' in a tight knit dress that hugged all the curves and should have been a few sizes larger, with strategically cut slits exposing bare skin all over the place. I charged her double the usual rate, just for the stress if my wife showed up or my Father in Law started dating her too!
