Post subject:  Derek ~ my son

Well everybody I am just waking up after spending the night in Hospital ER with my youngest son.
After spending 7-1/2 hours @ the ER . . . a cat scan and numerous blood tests (his white count was @ 15K) 2 bags of Saline Solution, two bags of antibiotics (thru the IV) and a huge shot in the bootie.

He was diagnosed with Rhabdomyolysis . . .

This past year he has lost 120 pounds and spent ALOT of time in the gym . . .

this weekend he started a NEW routine at the gym and really OVER DID IT!
But LIVE & LEARN . . . .

people we MUST TAKE CARE OF OUR BODIES AND OUR HEALTH !
NEVER take chances !
Had we not taken him when we did he might not be here today!
I owe a special thanks to Mrs. Dianna Bale (Nurse Bale), a woman that I can say . . . .

is a TRUE FRIEND!!! Love you Darlin'

Rhabdomyolysis CAUSES
.....................................................................................................

Injury and Trauma

Rhabdomyolysis results from a direct injury to muscle fibers. A muscle structure called the sarcolemma becomes damaged and the cells leak from it into the blood stream.

Broken bones and serious fractures can also lead to rhabdomyolysis.

Infections:
Legionnaires' disease, a rare is a lung infection caused by a bacteria called Legionella pneumophila can cause rhabdomyolysis. The bacteria may invade and harm muscle cells.

Many antibiotics are can be used to combat Legionella bacteria

Viruses can cause rhabdomyolysis. Especially influenza, both types A and B. It appears that the viruses enter and assault the muscle cells generating a toxin. Other viral agents include: Epstein-Barr, parainfluenza, cytomegalovirus, and herpes.

Metabolic and genetic factors:
People with genetic defects in their muscles can get rhabdomyolysis. In these cases the muscle cannot used a chemical the body produces for energy called ATP. During exercise the body does not correctly use this chemical resulting in misplaced energy and the destruction of cells.

Drugs and Toxins:
Toxin-mediated rhabdomyolysis may result from substance abuse, including abuse of the following: Ethanol, Methanol, Ethylene glycol and Isopropanol
Illegal drugs such as Heroin, Methadone, Barbiturates, Cocaine, Amphetamine, (MDMA, ecstasy)
and (LSD)

Rhabdomyolysis can also result from prescription and nonprescription medications such as:
Antihistamines , Salicylates, Fibric acid derivatives (eg, bezafibrate, clofibrate, fenofibrate, gemfibrozil). Anesthetic and paralytic agents, Quinine, Corticosteroids, Statins including Lovastatin.

Other causes

Heavy exercise in children cause rhabdomyolysis.

Shaken baby syndrome can lead to rhabdomyolysis.

Extreme cold exposure and heatstroke are causes of rhabdomyolysis.

Snake Bites can cause rhabdomyolysis.

Thank you everybody.
This is a lesson well learned and I hope that everybody takes something from it.
I have always been real clear ~ hydration hydration hydration.
He was doing a new CORE routine and being as the abs are slow twitch fibers you can do alot more before you really feel it . . . So what has happened is that he tore the muscle fibers and due to the fact that he was not properly hydrated his blood could not carry away the toxins (damaged muscle cells)released into the blood.
It will take as long as 6 weeks for full recovery and he will not be in the gym for a bit. BUT he has learned a very valuable lesson.

soooooooooo . . . PLEASE workout responsibly . . . Ya don't want to be a hott looking corpse

I am sorry you guys for not bringing all update sooner.
Derek is back at the gym, today, for the first time since the 22nd. His doctor gave him the OK this past Thursday. He had been to the doc on Monday but they would not release back to the gym until the bloodwork came back, and that was Thursday.
His blood, kidneys and liver are all good and he is taking this as a well learned lesson . . .
I thank you all for keeping him in your prayers.
