Post subject: | Defendant Thanks |
Has anyone ever had a defendant thank you just before you leave the jail after surrendering them? I had this happen to me on my last capture. This guy decided he wanted to lock himself in the bathroom, pressing his body against the door. After coaxing the latch open with a knife and applying force to the door we managed to get him out and into cuffs. He didn't actively resist, but didn't comply with any verbal commands at the same time. Long story short, we got him out safe, into the car and on the way to the county jail. We weren't "dickheads" to him once we got him in cuffs and on the way to the jail. This was a two hour transport, I sat in back with him and my partner drove. I made small talk and tried to calm him down a bit and tried to establish a "friendship" on the way to jail. It was mostly him shit talking the "system" and "the man". All in all, he was just another guy that didn't want to go to court because he had "things to do first" and was going to "turn himself in tomorrow". Funny thing happened though, as we were leaving with our paperwork in hand to get paid I heard "Hey!". It was him, he looked me directly in the eye and said "Thank You!". I said, out of habit, "yeah, no problem".... What do you all think? I cannot imagine people are just thanking us for taking them to jail.... |

I could make this long, detailed and thoughtful but...I'm not feeling philosophical, right now. Bottom line...running sucks. Life on the run is no kind of life. While these folks would never voluntarily go to jail, you may have ended a real ordeal for them. They see a light at the end of the tunnel that wasn't there before. |
