Two shot at Fort Oglethorpe Ga, Wal-Mart
Monday, December 26, 2005 ---- Around 10:45 p.m. George Curtis Hughes, 44, of Cleveland and Clyde Junior Perchelli, 21, of Decatur, Tennessee went inside the Fort Oglethorpe Walmart on Battlefield Parkway and according to a police officer, suspiciously went towards the area where cash is kept.
Officer Richard Williams noticed the pair and approached them. The two turned and left the building. Outside, the officer told the two to stop and Hughes pulled out a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and started shooting at Williams. The officer fired back and called for backup.
Officer Chris Clark arrived quickly and found the men in a western type gun battle. He too fired shots at Hughes. The suspect was hit several times and Hughes went down.
When the smoke cleared, Hughes had fired some 14 rounds out of a 30 round magazine.
A Walmart employee was hit by a stray bullet. He was rushed to the hospital and listed in stable condition.
Officer Williams was also struck by gunshots that hit his boot and grazed a shirt sleeve. He was not injured.
Hughes and the store worker were rushed to Erlanger Medical Center's emergency room where both were listed in stable condition. He was reportedly drunk as well.
Perchelli was taken into custody without incident. He reportedly told officers the pair planned to rob the store.
Both Hughes and Perchelli are charged with attempted robbery and weapons violations with Hughes facing additional charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
