Post subject:  Effective Cover From Bullets?

So I'm attending this training class when the instructor shows everyone a tape, and I didn't catch what the title of the VHS was.

Anyways, long story short, after viewing various types of common rounds being fired at various types of items common to an urban environment, the only three covers that defeated all kinds of bullets was a steel mail box, a fire hydrant, and an engine block.

Telephone poles, car doors, ordinary house walls, and other types of cover failed to adequately stop even 9mm rounds with any real consistency.

The tests shown on the video yielded the same results as my own tests conducted some time ago with a group of bail agents using, among other things, discarded body armor to see what would defeat what.

This is something to consider not just for your safety but also the safety of others who may be in the line of YOUR fire on the other side of a wall, car or other type of cover that Hollywood would have you believe actually stops bullets.

One can also use this topic to illustrate the penetration power of the rounds WE carry. As has already been addressed in another section on this forum, WE have to be very aware of the collateral damage our rounds can cause and how proficient we HAVE to be in our jobs.

I know we have to be prepared to take a life...but by the same token all other tactics and resources MUST be exhausted before resorting to the use of deadly force.

Again, as previously stated, what good do any of us do if we catch a $1ok fugitive, but incur a million dollar wrongful death lawsuit ?

Just my 2 cents worth.

Ruffin.
