Here is a very good example of what is happening in our little industry... this is in Virginia but it is taking place nationwide and I honestly don't know if there is anything we can do about it.... I wrote a couple of bonds around my AO in the past couple of days and every jurisdiction that I went into gave me the same report... bonds are not being given.... and if they are, they are PR bonds... we are slowly being removed from the loop. Spoke to one of the main contacts in Piedmont Regional Jail yesterday... he said I was only one of about 3 bondsmen he had seen in a week... I said "what is going on" and his reply was.......... "I have no idea... it is above my pay grade." The bonds we are writing are small and even the more serious felonies are getting PR'd or lower bonds applied... it is happening now all over the state and I fear all over the country. I have talked with other bondsmen and they all are crying... some are looking for other means of employment... some are getting out of the business altogether... Got a call from one of my "inside" contacts (we all have them) and he told me that a female that was arrested today on 'distribution of Marijuana" ... picked up with a bag full of individually wrapped bags and a pocket full of money... was given a $5000 UNSECURED bond and PR'd.... that is a class 5 felony that walked.... now I know the magistrate that did it and he has got to be getting instruction from up the line somewhere... he does not do this on his own... this defendant also had some history and still........... walked. Last week I personally saw a 3rd offense DUI PR'd from a local jail... that is unheard of until recently... this is taking place all over... last year that charge would have pulled at least a $5000 and possibly $10,000... and frankly in some areas that may have been a hold without bond... but not now... I am getting a few bonds here and there... but they are all rather small.... $500 to $3500 and that's about it. There are orders coming down from somewhere up the line in this process... these magistrates are not making these decisions to put these PR'd and low bonds on these defendants themselves... I know most of these magistrates and they have only recently started doing this... and they will not talk.... So what do ya think people.... times are changin' and you better be looking to expand your career opportunities and expand your "multiple streams of income" like one of our astute members has touted over and over.... the bond business is on the downswing unless something is done pretty damn fast.... IMHO It may not be evident in your state, in may not be hitting you just yet... but if the political forces behind this move continues to make inroads toward its agenda... you are in the sights and it is coming.... I hate to be such a pessimistic person here but give me something to smile about on this subject and I will be the first one laughing.... ok? I'm waiting for some good news................. throw it out here................. ... and BTW... all you recovery agents... what do you think will happen when there are no skips... cause there are no bonds............ bye, bye........... get in the repo business cause this one is slowin' down... |

Overcrowding is a big reason. Inmates are suing the heck out of the cities, counties etc. GOD knows we shouldn't offend their delicate nature. Repo is pretty strong up here alot of folks toys are being picked up. Harley repo is off the hook. I do not repo, but i do locate and uncover assets |

Bill, Could it have something to do with the recent battle with PTRS? Maybe they are testing the waters to see if those released on PR actually show up in court. In my area, we have seen more defendants released after 72 hours with no charges filed. However that is due to the district attorneys offfice being overloaded with cases. So, they usually don't file on the petty stuff. Those bails amounts are $10k or less. |

DCJS and Pretrial services as mentioned is most certainly the deal... replacing a privately funded business with a government agency that is tax supported is the ticket. The government, be it state or Federal is absolutely trying to take over much of our private industry... ie. health care, postal service, etc.... I don't even want to get into this but it is quite disheartening... it just makes me sick that the powers that be for some reason think the government is better at running our businesses than we are... I tend to think the present administration is in the lead here, but that is my own opinion... Our problem at present is focused on the bond business so I will try to stay on that subject and I tend to think, unfortunately, that our business is in a very difficult fight. |

Recovery has BEEN going slow for awhile now due to economy as well as bondsmen recoverying their own skips,Small bonds make for small gains for recovery agents IF they have a bondsmen that doesnt want to capture his/her own skip. All in all recovery agents have been feeling the effects for awhile now and slowly getting worse. So the great advice of having multiple streams of income has been followed by myself and should definately be followed by others as well. |

I got out of the bail bonding business when sureties started to give contracts to anyone, no liability and nothing on the line just write everything. I changed to recovery only and made a very good living for several years even managed to save a good nest egg. When most of the recoveries got cleaned up it started to slow down so i went back to school and got a Criminal Justice Degree and got in with a PI firm did my 4000 hrs and went into the PI business. Two years ago my son wanted to try bail bonds so i called in a favor owed from a surety i still work with and i got a contract for him , not much money in it as bonds are low now as with Virgina. Bill i am with you about the government they can not handle what they have involved themselves with now, let alone take on anything else. |

I might mention FWIW (for what it's worth)... I am a retired trucker and as such I get a small check from SS and another from my retirement... from UPS... it ain't much but if I don't write anything... all that happens to me is a reduction in my "adult toy factor" I have to live much closer to the hip... as it is. Unfortunately for me... I tend to indulge myself... and when this happens... and the indulge money dries up.... body orifices tend to tighten up somewhat... I think it is referred to as the "sphincter factor"... you old farts should relate to that. My concern is for my kids and all the other legal licensed bondsmen and recovery agents that are suffering with full time jobs that are on the major downturn... these folks are doing this full time and I can see the writing on the wall across the country... if the state/local/federal governments and all their many, many deep rooted agencies with all their personal and "do good for you" agendas think for one minute that there is a buck or an increase in their hold or power over their realm of control... they will go for the jugular... and we are in their sights. I do not know where this country is headed but it ain't good IMHO... I can only say that at my age... I probably won't have to worry with the worst since I will be out of here shortly. My kids and their kids are the ones that will ultimately suffer... unless they can pull control and sanity back into our society and that dear friends is a major fight that may not be winnable. Entitlements to everyone asking and lack of responsibility by anyone, especially the powers that be... are the problems as I see them. Sorry, I am getting off the subject... it is just that I grew up in a totally different society and I can see things from a perspective that some of you may not... however, I cannot believe that anyone with half a brain cannot see the writing on the USA wall.... and the scenario I posted on here some time ago about the "how to catch a wild pig" is playing out as we watch... Nuff said............................. |

Bill I will respond with what we talked about privately... Ponder this...The Government comes to the state and says here is $20 million to fund a pre-trial release study/program. The State, which is on the use or lose mentality like everyone on the Government teat, says ok. They institute the program and provide the policy changes, and the infrastructure. Then they implement the program, in for a penny in for a pound. Now the true costs of the program may or may not come to light and the state has to supplement the government grant. The next year, now that the state is DEPENDANT on the government teat, they say "By the way, if you want your money this year, this is what we want you to implement..." as the state administrator, what do you do? You keep your job and do what they want, who loses? The bondsmen, so what? They make more money than they should any way and don't do anything to deserve or earn it. Another government bureaucracy is born that is dependent on the government, which means your tax dollars. We don't need to discuss the current politics, because they are on a tear to implement all of their social re-engineering, and are no longer trying to hide that fact. It has nothing to do with race, it has to do with radical ideals, hatred for this country, lack of economic comprehension, and punishing the people who are financially successful. To gain control of a people, you must first isolate them from free thinking, make them dependent on the government, indoctrinate them into your accepted belief system, and isolate them from God.
