How FUNNY! they want to FIX HealthCare and they can't even figure out if someone is DEAD OR IN PRISON . . .
Federal economic stimulus cash was handed out to cons behind bars in Bay State prisons after a bureaucratic snafu resulted in $250 checks being sent to some inmates - and now red-faced feds want it back.

“Taxpayers already believe the inmates are running the asylum in Washington,” U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) said in a statement. “Now it appears they are being compensated for their efforts.”

Not only did the feds send the cash to incarcerated cons, but they failed to respond to state officials who sounded the alarm about the inmate windfall - now the subject of a national probe.

The state Department of Correction initially withheld stimulus checks mailed to 23 inmates because prison officials believed the convicts were not entitled to the cash, said DOC spokeswoman Diane Wiffin.

The DOC said it released the funds after the federal government ignored several requests for guidance.

“In the absence of a formal directive, DOC determined that it did not have grounds to continue to withhold the checks from the recipients,” Wiffin said in an e-mail.

The Herald learned yesterday the U.S. Social Security Administration is asking at least 14 of the Bay State prisoners to return the cash. Inmates are generally not allowed to receive Social Security benefits while incarcerated.

It’s not clear if the cons have already spent the money in the commissary or elsewhere, however.

Unbelievable, and i'm sure they have already spent the funds and will not return it.

Overheard on a News Caste yesterday . . . I was in the kitchen . . . a Senator was asked about the matter (by Nick Cavuto) . . . his response "it is such a paltry amount I don't understand why anyone is concerned" . . .

The calls from the jail are expensive, but the cost depends on the facility. It costs me more to take a call from DOC or an out of state jail than it does my local one. And yes, all commisaries are expensive. If you think that hospitals charge a ridiculous amount for an aspirin, find out what the correctional facilities charge for everything they offer. The thing is that most often the local facility doesn't receive the benefit for the inflated prices. It is still the outside company that makes the profit, and the local facility has no control over what they are forced to accept. It is all politics, and who in the state politics are paid the most to allow these companies to continue to financially rape everybody.

I cannot charge a defendant or indemnitor more than the state rate for a bond, but I am not required to pay out expenses that I don't get reimbursed for. So, when I take the calls that cost me, knowing that I am only acting as an answering service between the parties, I damn well expect to be paid my cost for them. My clients know that I have the option to take or reject their calls, and that I am not a free service. No matter if the defendant is a potential or former client, I am not their personal secretary. It is my choice to take or reject the call. They pay my cost, I take it. They don't, it's their problem to make their communications.

WE cannot charge for calls here. By law, tho, any calls to Bondsmen, Doctors, or Lawyers are FREE if the call is to a Local #. That was Enacted back in July 2001

In my eyes it shouldn't matter whether or not it's only $1 that was recieved, it's the principle and it shouldn't have happened. He doesn't understand why taxpayers are concerned that their money is being wasted? How is he a Senator?

Nothing is free............ I have several toll free numbers that would allow the inmates to make (free to them) calls but the jails will not allow the inmates to use those numbers from the jails... I also have local number but there again... not allowed to call them....

The 3rd party "Inmate Telephone" services that charge ridiculous prices for calls have a contract with the counties who I believe get a kick back on the calls and there is the bottom line. I have seen bils for a 1 minute call amount to $7.... I have called and raised hell but to no avail...

As long as there is money to be made from a service that otherwise could be provided by an outsider.... you will ultimately get the bill for it and we will continue to pay................. and "WE PAID FOR THIS" will continue.

... and BTW... the costs involved in goods and services are never calculated on just the product itself... there are so many factors involved in pricing that you will never know all of them and in the end...... you will have your $5000 hammer and $20 aspirin...

I was in the restaurant business for many years.... a glass of tea cost me less than 5 cents... water and mix.... I charged $1.25 for the glass... was I gouging........ damn right. I paid 2.50 for a glass of tea at Red Lobster last nite............. boy it was great...  I did get a free refill... I think it was free.... mmmmmmmm the meal was $85 with the tip (Gail and I) ........... No wonder I have no money......
