Right after I posted the "ice cycle" thing... CSI Miami had a story on.... last nite in fact... about a girl that killed her rival with a piece of ice off an ice carving of the 'Statue of Liberty"... she broke off one of the spikes and stabbed the other in the ear!!... oooo I bet that hurt... but they got her cause some of her suntan lotion was found in the water of the melt.... now that's some hi tech forensics...

Hey Bill,

The writers are probably stealing ideas from us and using them in the show!

I caught part of Chase, the ABC U.S. Marshal show. They had a episode of a guy impersonating a marshal in Texas. Well, we had our own guy here in CA doing the same thing.

The old 1975 Robert Redford movie Three Days of the Condor had mention of something similar. Redford played an analyst that worked in an office with the mission of reading everything. One of the things they talked about was a book where the person was murdered with a bullet made of ice.

I got to talking about maybe getting another carry weapon and thought I would just stick it on here rather than the other thread which had nothing to do with firearms.... I figured it would be better served and answered here...

So... how bout this?

Image

Glock 36... .45 cal... very light, very concealable... not too expensive... good name... what's the overall on this one... I had also considered the Colt... but that was only because I just love Colts... I have heard the newer models do not have the quality of the older ones... not sure about that... I suppose it boils down to preference....

Image

Colt Defender model, .45, also rather light but not as light as the Glock... a little more money also... both have steel slides... the Glock has a polymer frame and the Colt is some sort of Aluminum or some sort of alloy... I think...

My weapon take is as follows and just my personal preference..

In 1987 when the first Generation 1 = Glock 17 came out .. it was supposedly "banned" for NYC Cops to buy or possess due to it being Plastic and able to pass thru metal detectors.. while that myth was busted fairly swiftly .. the NYPD allowed us to finally buy this type of weapon if we wanted too since the NYPD Police Commissioner Benjamin Ward owned one and carried it.

I was 20 years old at the time & not even 1 year on the job.. I ran to my gun dealer and placed a deposit on the Glock 17 .. if memory serves me correctly it was approx $500 and change..? after a month of overtime (collars for dollars) I went and picked it up .. I was at that time an Official Die Hard Fan of the Glock ! If someone spoke badly about a Glock I would open a can of whoop ass .. lol. In 1994 the NYPD went from the 6 Shooter S&W Model 10 (38 Cal.) to the 9mm Semi Auto. They gave us a choice of the Sig Sauer 226... Glock 19... and S&W (Forget the model # ) .. some Pilot program also had the Sergent's Drivers using a Ruger 9mm.. anyways.. I tested out the Sig 226 and fell in love with it .. after that day .. my Glock 17 was retired and into the safe it went and to this day still remains there. I was involved in several shootings with this Sig Sauer 226 and at that time we had 9mm FMJ 115 grain rounds (eventually went to Hollow Point 115grain). I was involved in an off duty shooting where a kid displayed a gun outside a bar (later turned out to be an unloaded crossman bb gun this kid had) but I shot him twice and both rounds did some serious damage to this kids insides, which eventually took a toll and the kid died at the hospital... one round exited his back after severing his spinal cord upon exit.. I believe that not only the type of weapon / round caliber .. you also need proper placement of the round(s) on your subject target. Hitting the bad guy is what you want to do if your life depends on it, but hitting center mast (Between Shoulders and Center of Chest) is the best area which gives you the "largest" area to aim at when discharging your weapon.. they teach you at the Academy to Shoot to Stop until the Threat of Deadly Physical Force against you is no more... (There is a saying that goes "A Dead Man Tells No Tale" I personally take that as the person that if shot & killed, wont be able to testify against you in court.. take this how you may... the main thing is that you want go home at the end of the day ! )

Going on regular pick up's, I carry the Sig Sauer 226 (9mm) 15+1 .. 3 extra Mags of (15 rounds) ... // X-26 Taser (2 Cartridges - 25ft Green) // and depending on the area and crime that the person is out on bond with .. sometimes a Mossberg 500 Persuader w/ Breach Tip - (12 guage Shotgun) or if its an area like Fallujah, IRAQ.. my Sig Sauer 556 SWAT Rifle with ( 3 - 30 Round Mags ), also a SWAT Ballistic Raid Jacket (since I was shot twice in my days with a vest saving me both times and it does ruin your day getting shot...so I take NO CHANCES and ALWAYS wear my Vest! ) .

Every person will have their own personal preference as to what size and caliber fits the individual .. dont buy a gun just cause someone else has it .. test fire various ones so this way you will find a gun that fits you well and something you can handle (Recoil / Weight of Gun / Fit in your Hand..etc.).. also the price might persuade you due to budget restrictions.. but make sure you dont buy a piece of garbage either.. but you dont have to buy a Rolls Royce of guns either.. buy a reputable brand and you should be good to go..

Their are always legal ramifications when using a firearm and also your weapon being used against you if taken from you.. so always go to the range to practice shooting and buy a secure holster with some sort of safety lock / retention device that will prevent a bad guy from just pulling it out of your holster like a snapped leather holster.. I personally would recommend the X-26 Taser as the First Line of defense.. and then escalate the level of deadly force if the situation gets to that.. hopefully none of us here will need to use deadly force, but always be ready to use deadly force if your life depends on it..

Well.... short clarification... I am not a former LE and have no experience in live fire situations... I am a lowly country bail bondsman, who is old, fat and has two titanium knees and who does his own pickups that involve mostly DUI's or other fairly low key charges that would not normally involve high risk... now that is not to say that any situation involving an arrest can certainly escalate... but I am an extremely good judge of people and situations and also have had a little... just a little experience in the good old USMC back in the day... most of my weapons dealing have been personal applications with hunting rifles... mostly my trusted .308 bolt and a variety of semi-autos with a couple of wheel guns injected in the mix... I have a fairly large collection but mostly for collection only and only shoot a couple of the pistols... I do not own a vest, or a stun gun or taser of any description, I have no 'swat' type gear, no 511's or 223's or 617's or whatever the current "bad boy" suits are in vogue... if it won't fit in my jacket pocket or my belt... it probably isn't on me.

I do have a decent shoulder holster, which I never wear... 8)

I do have and I know it is a big joke on here... but standard Clorox in a dime-store water pistol can be extremely detrimental to a perp who comes at you... of course if you hit him in the eyes he will immediately go blind... possibly for real, which might create a lawsuit but then if you shot him and did not kill him... that would possibly result in one also... anyway...

I am a pretty good shot for an old man... I can also do quite well with
Image
my little Remington 788 in .308, which is actually the least expensive rifle I own but one of the best shooters and has never let me down... I practice often and can generally hit what I aim at and I am good with what I carry...

I do have
Image
a Winchester 12 gauge pump with an 8 round extension... black Kevlar stock and all... but it is in my bedroom closet and never goes out on a call with me...
Image
I usually (if ever) carry my little SP101 stainless Ruger .357 with +P.38's... or
Image
my XD Springfield .40 subcompact.. which shoots extremely well and has never misfired or 'stovepiped'...
Image
and I also have and have carried a much larger weapon...my Baretta .40 Cougar and of course I also have a
Image
Taurus Satin finish PT92AF .9mm... but I do agree that bullet choice as well as shot placement is more important than caliber and name brand...

There is also luck and draw of the cards involved but you can always stack the deck in your favor.

I have told the tale of the young Eskimo mother that shot and killed a large brown bear with a .22 rifle while protecting her young baby out in the woods of Alaska... she shot one time and hit him in the eye... which immediately killed him deader than 6 oclock... but there again... is the luck of the draw... but it happens.

If I should anticipate a situation that needs a..... let's say... a more experienced hand involved... I will just call you or one of the more professionals on this site... I feel they would possibly lend me a hand... maybe... 8) 8)

I just wanted to know about the Glock 36 and the Colt Defender... no real deal here, just curious ... I know everyone touts the Glock and of course the Colts are good too... I have heard that some of the newer .45's on the market are better than the Colt but I think most of this is matter of opinion, which is all I was looking for and you have answered that quite in depth...

BTW... if you wonder why in the hell I need another pistol... well,..... I have no idea other than............. IT IS CHRISTMAS... and besides... you can never have too many GUNS.... any good ole boy will tell you that............ 8) 8) and even living inside the city limits of my little town... I still have cows in my backyard... so all country boys need a new gun every so often....

Bill,

I too have a Taurus, the 99AF so its not as pretty as your 92. But to big and bulking to carry concealed. I have tried the Glock 30 and 36. I have looked at but not fired the Colt, Para Ordinance or Taurus compact 45s.

I'm just looking for a light weight 45 to put in my pocket when walking the dogs late at night or doing some leg work on a skip and might just run into him or her unexpectantly.
